It’s that time of the year again when everyone takes stock of the
year gone by and makes predictions about the upcoming year. Anyone can
talk about future trends but when someone like Eric Schmidt, Google’s
executive chairman has something to share, one should listen. In a recent interview with Bloomberg TV, Mr Schmidt talked a bit about the past year and shared his thoughts on which technologies have potential. He also talked about which trends took off before and how that will shape the coming year. He didn’t just talk about Google’s growth or its future plans but also about some other major technology sectors that may take off in 2014.
He laid special emphasis on the growing importance of big data and the rise of personal genetics.
Technology Trends of 2013-14
Even after being in the thick of things and surrounded by some of the brightest minds at Google, Schmidt admitted that it’s not easy to spot technology changes which are coming down the road. In the video it talks about how he measures the rise of social media and postponed Google’s entry in this domain.
“At Google, the biggest mistake I made was not anticipating the rise of social networking phenomena,” Schmidt said. “Not a mistake we are going to make again. I guess in our defense we were busy working on many other things, but we should have been in that area and take responsibility for that.”
But the way Google is focusing on the development of the social network Google+, chances are pretty good that they will catch up with other major social networking platforms in 2014. The key limiter for Google would be the pace of innovation and looking at how they have moved in the last few years 2014 seems pretty promising.
Check out the video below in which he talks about technology trends of 2014.
