For avid users of Gmail, backing up one’s account has been on top of the wish list for new features for quite some time. Luckily, there have been third-party options to do so. Backupify provides an easy way to back up your Gmail to the cloud and WindowsMail, Thunderbird and eM Client are desktop email clients that can back up your Gmail account too.
However, Google has now added a built-in option to backup Gmail and Google Calendar, making it much easier to back up all of your important Google files, as it can be done in a matter of seconds. Even better, no additional software is required to do it.
Our guide will outline the step-by-step process of downloading your Gmail and Google Calendar data using the latest method built into Google.
Step #1: Login to Google
Before clicking the “Archive” button, which will begin the
download process for your Gmail account and Google Calendar data, first
you need to make sure you’re logged into the Gmail account you want to
back up.
On this page click which Google products you’d like to backup. Your options include “Gmail,” “Google Calendar,” “Gmail contacts,” “Google Drive,” “Google Voice,” “Google Hangouts” or “YouTube.” Select as many as you’d like.
After you select the Google products you want to backup, click the “Create archive” button.
Please Note: The “Gmail download” option isn’t currently listed, as Google plans to roll out this option in the next couple of weeks.
Also, if you would like to change the file format in which you will receive your Google backup, click the “change” button by where it says “.zip file format” near the top of the Create an Archive page.
Google creates your archive in a matter of moments, and at the bottom of the download page there will be a “Download” button to access your archive. The file size of your archive as well as the day it was created will also be listed in the download box.
There is also a nifty “Show archive details” button in the download box. By clicking this button, the menu will expand and reveal which Google products were included in your archive download.
After you click the blue “Download” button, click to save the .zip file to your “Desktop.”
To view the contents of your Google archives, you’ll need to unzip the files using your favorite unzip program.
