Chrome-Apps-on-Android

Google announced a new developer framework that presents Chrome packaged apps as native Android apps. That’s right- build one packaged Chrome extension and you can use a little more of Mountain View’s code to create native apps for Windows, OS X, and Android.
We’ve covered this topic before, but this move fits perfectly into Google’s strategy for dominating the web in today’s market. Bringing Chrome apps to Android makes perfect sense when you think about how Google works.

The Plan

A quick recap. Google wants to control computing by making an end-run around Microsoft and Apple through its services.
Mountain View doesn’t care what platform you use – Mac, Windows, or iOS, though it would like you to use Android and Chromebooks.

The company just wants you to use its services on that platform. It’s OK with you buying a Mac as long as you’re using Google Calendar and Docs.
Google is building an empire atop of other platforms, monopolizing the networks between them. It wants to own the internet.
It delivers its products mainly through Chrome, which is rapidly evolving from a web browser into a full-blown platform of its own.
Think about it. Chrome has a web store, third-party apps, and is available everywhere on desktop and mobile. At this point, it’s hard not to use Chrome.

How This Works

Google is clearly planning to become a one-stop shop for new apps, the go-to place for startups looking for the most efficient way to distribute their new app.

Make one app, add some code, some separate UIs, and you can distribute your app for Windows, Mac, and Android. That’s efficient.
Multi-platform services like note-taking apps, journals, and calendar apps could distribute their product, synced across multiple platforms… through Google’s cloud, of course.
Google becomes the go-to service provider for all the cool new apps, making Chrome more attractive, and hooking everybody into Mountain View’s ecosystem.

Chrome as the Future

Google has invested heavy amounts of resources into Chrome as a platform. It made it an app store, a platform, and a way to view content.
Tech analysts have wondered if Google will merge its Chrome products into Android. Everybody expects the company to feed its browser into its more popular mobile OS.

What if the opposite happens? What if Google moves Android apps into Chrome apps to encourage people to use Chrome? It would provide a hell of a boost to its desktop apps.
Plus, it could unify all the Google products under one roof. You would avoid forcing a universal UI on all devices like Windows 8 did while simultaneously encouraging cross-platform apps.
Google has shown a lot of enthusiasm for Chrome, far more than Android. One of them has gotten a new streaming dongle. The other has seen three relatively minor updates.

Final Thoughts

I could see that. Maybe five years down the road Chrome becomes the be-all end-all for all of Google’s services. It could happen.
